A mother dog and her nine puppies now have homes to spend Christmas with after they were found in a sealed box at the dump back in June.
The family was found in the Puntzi Lake Landfill, and Casey, a sweet border collie-husky mix, lay wedged around her newborn pups trying her best to protect them.
Luckily, a Good Samaritan found the box at the dump and brought the dogs to a local veterinary clinic, where they were treated for dehydration and malnutrition.
Now, the nine puppies have all found loving homes, and Casey has miraculously found her original owner.
“Shockingly, Casey had been stolen many months earlier, and a caring friend sent the news story to her true guardian, who was thrilled to be reunited with her,” explained the BC SPCA.
The shocking incident prompted the BC SPCA to launch a search for whoever was responsible for trapping the dogs inside the box and leaving them to die.
“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die,” said Lorie Chortyk, the SPCA’s general manager of communications.
“Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime.”
No news has been shared about the progress of that investigation.
